Russia threatened to retaliate against Montenegro for their decision to
become NATO members, one day after they officially singed their
accession to the military alliance with 29 Northern Atlantic militaries.
They were praised by the USA for following this path, despite Russian
pressure.
While the Montenegrin Prime Minister was in Washington for the accession ceremony, Russia condemned what they called “anti-Russian hysteria and hostile course of Podgorica”.
The Moscow Foreign Ministry says Montenegro is responsible for its own actions, reminding that they also joined the European Block with their sanctions against Russia in 2014.
For this reason, Russia says, they have the right to take retaliation measures based on reciprocity. “Same as in physics, in politics as well every action has a reaction”, the Foreign Ministry’s declaration said.
Montenegro was the first country to join NATO since 2009, when Albania and Croatia joined the alliance.
