Rusmali blames DP leadership

In an interview for “Radio Free Europe” he says that first they need to analyze the shocking loss of the June 23rd elections.

“You speak about electing the new leader when democrats have not recovered yet from the shocking loss. There is no credible and accurate answer about what caused this loss, and judging by what leader Berisha declared in the leadership meeting, we should not expect this to happen by the end of the process. The analyze of the elcetion will be made by the new leader and by the forums that he will decide, if they see it reasonable to take care of this”, Rusmali declared.

“Berisha considered the election of the new leader as a new beginning for the party, as a turn for victory, the start of victory. But the fact that the analyze for the loss did not happen before the process, makes the election of the leader to not be made from scratch, as the first chapter of victory, but remains the last chapter of loss, what makes the entire process unnatural and irrational”, he declared.

When asked about what happens if the analyze for the loss is not made before the leader is elected, Rusmali declared: “If they don’t learn from the shocking loss, the solution offered to the Albanians and the Democratic Party supporters will be the opposite of what they expect. If they expect a new leadership, we will offer them an even older one. If they expect an unstained leadership, with would risk offering them a stained leader. If they expect a strong, charismatic, visionary, independent, determined and energetic leader, we could risk offering them a puppet without a vision, without a soul, without authority and anemic”, Rusmali declared.

“And this is not everything. I fear that rushing to close the process quickly could cause failing it. The process might become formal, without a real competition between authorities and values; a false one. The process might find the indifference of the Albanians and Democratic Party supporters. But this will not be seen now. It will be seen in the next elections. The first loss of this rush will be the new party leader, and our adversary would be the only one profiting”.

According to Rusmali, the real reason why the Democratic Party lost was this: “The leader of this party, the Prime Minister, introduced this campaign as his personal battle. Victory and loss this time would have only his name. The entire Democratic Party leadership accepted tp disappear. The Albanians noted it, the media noted it. This is not a platform. This is not a program. This is a way of behaving. It is no surprise that voters considered this as arrogance. The party leader, without the help of anyone, planned the candidate list without using any moral, legal and political principle. He included in these lists aggressive exponents from the left and asked the democrats to vote for them against their nature. He included in lists leaders of other parties and asked the democrats to welcome them. These actions were understood as actions that removed at least 100.000 votes from the Democratic Party. This was a behavior, not a platform or a program. And he filled the rest of the list based only on clientelism. I’m not continuing with this, because I’m part of those who weren’t satisfied and that would be conflict of interest. But I must reiterate that this behavior was interpreted as arrogant”.

“The last behavior that I was able to identify is the fact that in a campaign, the party leader and the media around him, tried to make the profile of the successor that the leader had decided. With these elections the Democratic Party is connecting not only the right to govern, but even their political fate. Although it might seem cynical, the democrats were left without alternatives and this has been seen as arrogance. If the democrats have voted against us, this happened because of the arrogant actions”, Rusmali concluded.
