Bucharest gave signals for recognizing the independence of Kosovo after a
meeting that the Romanian Prime Minister, Victor Ponta, attended in
Tirana with his Albanian counterpart, Edi Rama.

Kosovo had a special place in the talks, with Prime Minister Rama and the Foreign Minister, Ditmir Bushati, asking this European Union country to recognize the state of Kosovo.

“We discussed about Kosovo and as Prime Minister Rama knows, Kosovo is a topic that brings controversies in romania. The final position of Romania on this issue will be taken after a cooperation between the Presidency, the Government and the Parliament. But I cannot speak on behalf of the government, which has always supported the development of institutions in Kosovo. Even from the view of the Romanian government, the best option would be having Serbia and Kosovo in the European Union. This is the future of our entire region”, declared the Romanian Prime Minister.

Rama considered his Romanian counterpart with origin from Voskopoja e friend of Albanians and a model for economic successes.

“One of the keys of the economic successes of Victor Ponta’s government is the unblocking of many funds related to the European Union. The Romanian experience and expertise in this direction will be a strong support and reference point for us, so that we can benefit in an efficient way from the integration instruments. Another success story in Romania is fight against organized crime. We are happy that we are being offered a direct help for increasing the quality of human capital in the state police, which fights the organized crime directly”, declared the Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, .

When asked about the declaration of the Russian Prime Minister that Crimea is a similar case to Kosovo, both Prime Ministers declared that this claim was wrong.

Victor Ponta guaranteed Romania’s vote for Albania’s candidate status, despite the fact that some countries ar estill declaring that Albania is not ready.

“Romania favors the status in June. There are European countries declaring that Albania is not ready for integration. We want to help Albania in their path to European integration, and for this we are offering our knowledge in the fight against organized crime, which is essential for every democratic government. There is an economic potential that has not been exploited between both countries”, Ponta declared.

Romania is one of the five European Union countries that has not recognized Kosovo’s independence. When asked about this, the Romanian Prime Minister declared:

“We have supported the establishing, organizing and development of the state institutions in Kosovo. The best solution for us would be for Kosovo and Serbia to be integrated in the European Union”.
