The Romanian Parliament Speaker, Stefan Sgonea, attended his first visit
to Tirana since 2006. He met with the homologue Ilir Meta, declaring a
full support to his country for taking the candidate status of Albania
in the Council of Europe by the end of December.
“Romania is part of the countries that have supported your European path, and I believe that we have had all the problems that you are having now, such as corruption and the right of minorities. But these are things that can be resolved if dialogue is kept in consideration. We stand to our decision to support you in the integration path and we hope that the report for your country will be planned positively, so that you can receive your good news in the next year”, Zgonea declared.
When asked if the opposition’s protest about what they call the cause of the free vote will affect the Council’s decision making by the end of December, Parliament leader Ilir Meta said that it was nothing of great concern.
“This is one of the ways to express an opposing idea. But the opposition is prayed to take its role in this process and I will guarantee them every space for their role”, Meta declared.
The Romanian Parliament Speaker was unclear about the recognition of Kosovo, but he valued the talks between Prishtina and Belgrade and declared that Romania supports the European agenda of the region.
