Rinas Airport surplus profits mean there’s room for negotiating lower prices

The Rinas Airport concession has economic misbalances that do not benefit the Albanian government.

Top Channel has learned that BDO Albania has completed the economic audit of the concessionary agreement for the only international airport in the country.

The detailed findings of the audit will be made public only after the report is sent to parties, the government and the airport concessionary.

Top Channel learned that the company has earned more revenues than predicted in the initial scenario.

For years, the Tirana International Airport is one of the concessions with the highest profits in Albania.

According to the official balance, the company realized 22 million EUR of profit for 2017, or 46% more than the net revenues.

The concessionary agreement signed in 2004 has an article which allows any of the parties to review the independent economic position of the concession. This was the gap that the Albanian government used last summer to request an audit of the concession by an independent expert.

What happens now? After the audit, the government has the right to start negotiating with the concessionary company and request compensation.

Based on the contract provisions, this compensation could come through a direct payment in the budget, or through a reduction of the flight fees, which would benefit citizens.
