Reviewing the “Media Article”, Xhafaj: “Its purpose was not to limit media freedom”

The Draft Law for the Anti-Corruption Prosecution did not have the
problematic Article 13 in July, when it was first introduced. This
article was drafted by the US OPDAT experts, this Monday.

Fatmir Xhafaj, the Socialist MP and Chairman of the Justice Reform Commission, said the way how it is formulated leaves room for doubts, but its purpose is to eliminate pressure against the justice system, without limiting the media freedom.

“Due to political pressure, trials against people vested with power have been concluded earlier than expected. The media article needs to be regulated”, said Xhafaj for Top Channel.

Fatmir Xhafaj said that with “regulation” he means finding a balance between the purpose of the law and the media freedom.

“The purpose of this law is very good and it should be regulated in order to prevent illegal influences on Prosecutors and Judges. The question is what will be the role of the media. Not only to defend the media, but also to make it a partner in the fight against corruption. This needs to be regulated and reformulated”, Xhafaj underlined.

The Chairman of the Justice Reform Commission said he is ready to discuss the matter with media representatives.

“I believe that we will sit together and find a solution”, he added.

The representative of the Socialist Movement for Integration, Petrit Vasili, said he would ask the Commission to remove this “unacceptable” paragraph.
