The EU assistance to Albania, including the funds for civil society,
follow a strict procedure with rigorous auditing systems based on very
high standards of internal audit, which guarantee the transparency and
management of European Union funds.

This is the explanation given by the European Commission regarding the claims that Ambassador Ettore Sequi left Tirana due to an involvement in corruption.

“This is not true. Ambassador Sequi was invited for a key position in the Italian Foreign Ministry, which had some changes lately. He has done an excellent job. The High Representative, Catherine Ashton, and the Commissioner for Enlargement, Stefan Fule, thank him for the important contribution and efforts to bring Albania closer to the European Union, and wish him all the best. This was his choice. We would have wanted him in the post he had”, declared Spokesperson Maja Kocijancic.

After the resignation of the EU Ambassador, Ettore Sequi, the EU diplomatic body has started the procedure for selecting the new Head of the Tirana Delegation, which will appointed in summer.

“The post is open for applications from the European Union institutions and the diplomatic service of the member countries. We have started a procedure for this post and the final authority to decide is the High Representative. As soon as this process will be over, a new Head of the Delegation for Albania will be appointed. Meanwhile, the delegation’s work will continue based on the standard practice”, Kocijancic declared.

After New York, Afghanistan and Albania, the Italian diplomat returned to his country where he is working as Chief of Cabinet for Minister Federica Mogherini. However, his job in Tirana aends in April.
