Residents of the Salce-Kozare village, in Kucova, demand the government to rebuilt the 300-year-old church that was destroyed by a fire five years ago, during the Saint Mary celebrations.
A misplaced candle made the village devotees lose their century-old church overnight. The building had been preserved with great dedication even during the communist regime, when religion was banned.
The residents want to raise funds and rebuilt it, since their spiritual connection with the church is stronger than money.
The church was built in the late 1700s and the Byzantine cupola was covered with mural paintings. The murals, depicting biblical stories, were preserved much better than other churches.
