Unchecked discharges of hydrocarbon waste coming out of oil wells in the Ballsh area, owned by the state oil company Albpetrol, seriously endanger the lives of residents in the village of Zharrëz in the municipality of Patos.
Pits filled with crude oil waste threaten the lives of the children as many of the oil wells are located near residential houses.
Pits are reported to be the main cause of blood diseases among the inhabitants of this area, while the streams mixed with hydrocarbon waste cross the farmers’ lands, severely damaging agricultural products.
No measures have been taken over the years to eliminate pollution and residents are demanding the isolation of pits filled with greenhouses and crude oil.
Only inside the village of Zharrëz there are 7 oil wells with ecological pits filled with waste and crude oil, while in the entire oil-bearing area of Patos-Marinza, their number is several times higher.
