13 years to the day after the deadly explosion of the weapons dismantling depot in Gerdec near Tirana, where 26 people lost their lives and 300 others were injured, the family members are still seeking justice.
Today, the ‘Association of Families of Gerdec Victims’ in a public statement mentions the failure of politics and judicial bodies to do justice, and even the obstruction that the government is posing to open cases in international courts.
“The Association of Families of the Victims of the Gerdec Explosion finds the opportunity today, in the 13th anniversary of the Gerdec tragedy, to thank wellwishers who, from near or far, give us the courage to continue our lives, and to take our right war to the end. March 15 has already become a symbolic day to appreciate justice, politics and humanity,” said a statement from the victims’ families.
It further added: “Justice was tried and failed. Although some people were convicted, they have already escaped justice and many others were not investigated. We heard all sorts of animal names being rumored, that left traces on letters and faxes, but no one had the courage to investigate and uncover the event.
“Justice also left untried the former Minister of Defense, who today is running again for MP. So, justice did not catch yesterday’s uncles nor today’s cousins of those responsible. Justice even confused the name of the person who set the gunpowder on fire. Justice allowed them to return to business or politics, to build mansions and do politics. The lives lost on March 15 2008 are not returned, but justice could be done, by grace or by force. Justice reforms or not, the ‘political partnership’ does not want justice to be done.”
