The Albanian Foreign Minister, Ditmir Bushati, declared that Albania and
the Council of Europe are in a partnership phase. During the conference
“Membership of Albania in the Council of Europe, from assistance to
partnership”, h valued the help of this organization as one of the
firsts that assisted Albania in the first democratic steps in the
construction of the rule of law.
The head of the Albanian Parliamentary Delegation, Valentinaj Leskaj, asked the removal of the monitoring status, listing the progress in four directions: advancing with the reforms, the June 23rd elections, human rights, the rule of law and cooperation between political parties.
“I want to take advantage from this moment to make our request for Albania to leave the monitoring status and take the post-monitoring one”, Leskaj declared.
The British Parliament Member, Jonathan Evans, also one of the rapporteurs of the Parliamentary Aassembly of the Council of Europe for Albania, declared that monitoring is important.
“Albania has agreed about this in 1995 and has taken its commitments. Our role will be to verify if we are happy with it, to convince that these commitments have been respected, because this is key as regards Albania. We can say that Albania has respected these commitments, as the Prime Minister declared, for Albania’s objective to become an European Union member”, Evans declared.
Present in this conference was also Verena Taylor, who spoke about the importance of cooperation between Albania and the Council of Europe in the main areas, focused on the country’s European integration.
Based on this conference they also signed the Understanding Agreement between the Diplomatic Academy of the Foreign Ministry and the Political Study School at the Council of Europe.
