The Democratic Party is opposing once again the government decision to
register the identifying number of cell phones, known as IMEI.
The Democratic Party leader, Lulzim Basha, declared that this action is anti-constitutional and an effort of Prime Minister Rama to brutally enter the lives and privacy of Albanians.
“Through this way Rama tries to enter brutally in the life and privacy of the Albanian people. He tries to control their lives, to build a register with the confidential data of the Albanian people, by killing the privacy that is granted to them by law. After taking over some independent institutions, and after trying to take over even justice, after creating his own investigation bureau, Edi Rama is now trying to enter the private life of the Albanian people”, Basha declared.
The Democratic Party appealed this government decision at the Constitutional Court. While waiting for the verdict, Lulzim Basha invites the citizens to react by disobeying.
“The Albanian people should react with disobedience. They should refuse with contempt and not give away the personal data”, the DP leader declared.
This appeal went also for the phone operators.
“The companies must respect the Constitution of Albania and not hand over the personal data of Albanian citizens to Edi Rama, Otherwise they will be sued by the Democratic Party and the citizens”, Basha declared.
IMEI serves to identify a mobile phone, mostly to stop its theft.
Harito: No surveillance can be made through IMEI

After the accusations of the Democratic Party, the government reacted through the Minister of Innovation, Milena Harito.
Harito rejected the opposition’s claims for interventions in private data.
“The government has nothing to do with the personal data of citizens. But the government has the right to fight smuggling. IMEI has nothing to do with the content of communication. It is just a code of a machinery. It is like saying that through the chassis number, the government can find out who the driver is. These are empty words from Lulzim Basha”, Harito declared.
