The Minister of Transportation, Edmond Haxhinasto, declared that Albania
needs 1.2 billion EUR of infrastructure investments to connect with the
regional transportation networks.
“Albania has invested more than 3.7 billion ALL in infrastructure during the past 20 years. We have concluded with our study that our market needs 1.2 billion EUR of other investments in the future”, Haxhinasto declared.
The Minister made this declaration during a meeting with the Ministers of Transportations of Balkan,. The countries of the region have been coordinating their investments to build a joint transportation network of roads and railways, a process led by the EU.
Oliver Onidi, from the European COmmission, said the maps with the network plans are finalized, so that this region leaves the past tradition of having each country building its own network.
The plan will connect seven countries of the region with the European corridors, and Haxhinasto said the government is seeing the option of engaging private capital, as they did with the Blue Highway, for which there is an understanding memorandum between Albania, Montenegro and a Chinese company.
The basic network has 5975 kilometers of roads and 4600 kilometers of railways, including 7 ports and 11 airports.
