The European Commission denies having concrete plans for establishing asylum centres in Albania.
Their response to the enquiry made by BIRN journalists was that they haven’t identified yet the regions that will serve to this purpose, and that they are currently discussing the possibility of exploring the concept.
The Council will meet on June 28th to discuss a series of matters, including the opening of the accession negotiations with Albania and Macedonia. But it seems that the main topic of this meeting will be the refugee crisis.
The matter has taken urgent tones after the ultimatum that the Interior Minister of Germany, Seehofer, has given to Merkel, that of returning refugees or breaking the coalition.
The president of the European Council, Donald Tusk, and the Austrian Chancellor, Sebastian Kurz, were the first ones who gave the idea of creating asylum seeking centres outside the EU.
