Reform, everyone in Nishani’s meeting

In the meeting organized by the President, the Albanian parties
expressed their will to realize a judiciary reform, but they held
completely different stances about how to do it.

President Nishani declared that the independence and impartiality of the judiciary system needs to be respected by everyone.

Prime Minister Rama and his ally, Ilir meta, say that the judiciary problems in Albania are much bigger than that, and that’s why they demand a direct and strong approach.

“We can hide behind the Constitution and show the laws to each other. We can become the loudest spokespersons of freedom and rights for the corrupted judges of the High Council of Justice, but this will not take us in the EU. This will only feed the harsh debates between us. The EU will never open its doors if we don’t prove two basic things, that justice is not something on sale, and that we are all equal to law”, Rama declared.

“The judiciary reform will create conditions for the system to be really independent from politics, but it should not be independent from the Constitution and the law, as it has frequently happened”, Meta declared.

The opposition leader opposed the steps taken so far by the governing majority and considered them an attempt to capture justice.

“The reforming of the judiciary system to fight corruption should be done by the system itself, not by the governing. The governing must stay away from the judiciary. Capturing the justice system politically is the worst source of deformation and corruption in justice”, Lulzim Basha declared.

The Minister of Justice, Nasip Naco, underlined the High Council of Justice, which might be the tip of an iceberg that will continue in all other links.

“The High Council of Justice Reform will preserve independence and will increase the accountability of this institution. On the other hand, it will help avoiding to appoint and promote judges through nepotism. It is time for the HCJ members to be depoliticized and appointed through qualified majority votes in Parliament. We need to create clear criteria for their appointing”, Naco declared.
