The US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Euroasia,
Philip Reeker, declared on Voice of America that one of the most
important responsibilities of the new President in Albania is the
preservation of independence in constitutional institutions such as the
Secret Services and the General Prosecutor.
“The presidency has a very important responsibility of protecting the independence of democratic institutions in Albania, such as the protection of democratic institutions in Albania, such as the secret service or the General Prosecution, institutions that have a close collaboration with the international partners. This duty is important for the president and we think that it is important that he collaborates with the international community, in a time when we support Albania for their full integration in the Euro-Atlantic family”, declared the US high rank official.
After the election of the new president, the Albanian politicians will return to the EU recommendation fulfillment, says Reeker in VOA, so that the country can receive the candidate status.
Reeker says that the presidential election was a lost chance for the parties to show consensus.
“He was elected with partial votes and this was a lost chance for showing national consensus and the ability to compromise. The essence of democracy stays at the ability to make compromise. This is what the European Union expects, what the Albanian people expect. We believe that it is important for the political leaders from all Albanian parties to focus on their job. They should work for the 12 important recommendations that the European Union has given more than one year ago”, Reeker declared.
As for the role of the US Ambassador in Albania, and his interventions in the local politics, beyond the initiatives such as “Act Now”, Reeker declared that the stance of Mr. Arvizu, same as those of his predecessors, are in full accordance with the close and friendly relations of both countries.
“Albania is a new democracy and we want to help it towards the European integration, especially in achieving the goal of the EU candidate status”, the US high rank official declared.
