The United States sent a strong message to Prime Minister Sali Berisha,
regarding the importance that the independence of constitutional
institutions has for the US before the next elections.
The US Deputy Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs, Philip Reeker, declared that the US will follow closely the events of the next year.
“It is truly a honor for me to return in Albania and especially in this important year that coincides with the 100th anniversary of independence. With the Prime Minister we discussed about the strong mutual relations. Albania is a reliable partner of USA. We discussed about Albania’s European perspective and the latest developments in the region, by valuing the views of the Prime Minister in the regional and global issues. Washington remains committed to the further democratization of the region and its Euro-Atlantic integration. As I told the Prime Minister, Washington will follow Albania very closely during the next year. We hope to see progress with the reforms and the respecting of the independence of the democratic institutions. The next weeks are critical for showing the continuity of reforms and the seriousness of purposes that go beyond politics and that represent the best interest and desires of the Albanian people”, Reeker declared.
“I updated Mr. Reeker with all the reforms and the problematic that we are facing, and with the determination of the government to make everything possible in order to deserve the EU candidate status. I guaranteed that the government will make everything possible for free and honest elections. I invite the US government and US institutions to have a wider presence in the elections. A special discussion with Mr. Reeker was the consolidation of the independence of constitutional institutions”, Berisha declared.
The meeting between Reeker and Berisha was scheduled to last one hour, but they came out 20 minutes later. Mr. Reeker is visiting Tirana for the conference “The future role of NATO and EU for Southeastern Europe, the EU enlargement and the trans-Atlantic challenges”. A special place in the dialogues of Reeker with the Albanian officials might be taken by the most recent events.
Any discussion about the privatization of the Albpetrol Company is not excluded, since the tender will have big companies coming from Russia, China and the US competing among each other.
