The Bank of Albania undertook a special program in 2013 to reduce bad
loans. The program was about selecting 17 big bad loaners who make 22%
of the total of bad loans, with a 200 million EUR value.
These enterprises that have received loans from several banks at the same time, would have to undergo a detailed analyze of their financial indicators, to find an installment they can actually afford.
Since they had loans from several banks, the scheme was to establish a leading bank, which, with the consensus of the other ones, would encase the money to later share them with the others, so that the client didn’t have the pressure of several banks at once.
When the initiative was implemented last year, the banks faced something unexpected. Most of the businesses refused to be part of the program and took advantage of the immunity given them by the law that protects personal data. As result, the Bank of Albania say they have found solution only for a small number of them.
However, the process will continue this year too and they will make negotiations with other big clients.
