A report of the European Stabilization Initiative (ESI), based in
Brussels, proposes the red lines for the election standards in Albania.
ESI appealed the international community to be clear about the European fate of Albania, if standards will be violated before or during the June 23rd elections, as it has happened in the past.
““The key message given from all international observers, especially the European Union, should be that all Albanian institutions must respect the laws that they have created. There are some red lines that cannot be crossed. The Albanian leaders must know that the international community is watching. When these lines are previously declared, it it impossible to be violated after. First of all, the electoral administration members cannot be removed for reasons that are not defined in the Electoral Code. Secondly, the ballot counting and judging of appeals should be done through a strict observation of the Electoral Code procedures”, the report says.
In this report the ESI analyzes the history of problematic elections in our country, the political confrontations, the failures and the delays with the European Union integration path, warning that there are other chances of failure due to the elections’ standards.
“This would cause a major crisis in the Albanian policy. Another result would be the loss of every credible politics towards the European Union integration, in a near future, and a spiral of political, social and economic ruin for Albania”, the report says.
The June 23rd elections are considered by this report as a test not only for democracy, but also for the rule of law. ESI recommends the European Union to make its stance very clear, in order to avoid harsh conflicts in the future.
