The Ombudsman greeted the decision of the Council of Europe for the
resolution that defines the political prisoners, different from the
Albanian delegation that voted against.
While the politically persecuted people are continuing their hunger strike in Tirana, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe passed with 100 votes in favour, 64 against and 12 abstains for the “politically prisoner” definition resolution.
“This resolution foresees the basic rights, especially that of freedom of speech, religion, freedom to expression and organization. The Ombudsman has supported and promoted the approach to the international standards in the Albanian politics. For this reason, the Ombudsman supports the decision of the European structures that serve to the Albanians’ rights”, declared the Ombudsman’s spokesperson, Elona Demollari.
The Socialist MP, Taulant Balla, declared that the Albanian MPs who were present in the room must give explanations for their vote.
The former MP, Alexander Biberaj, now part of the New Democratic System, has criticized the Albanian MPs for voting against and leaving Albania on the side of the former Soviet Union countries.
“They are uniting votes with Russia and positioning Albania with the former Soviet eastern block. Russia and Azerbaijan have always voted against the interests of Albania. Russia and Azerbaijan have always voted against Kosovo’s independence”, Biberaj declared.
The former vice chairman of the Parliamentary Assembly at the Council of Europe added that the Albanian votes at the Council of Ministers are fruit of Berisha’s trades with Azerbaijan.
