Rama’s letter to Withers

Dear Ambassador Withers, I write you on behalf of many people that read
your public letter with attention and great respect, and I want to tell
you that all my acquaintances hold the best memories of you, of a
special friendship that you built with the Albanians during your service
here, as a concrete expression of the great friendship between Albania
and the US.

This Sunday’s press published a letter that the Socialist leader, Edi Rama, addressed to the US ambassador John Withers, in which he expresses his high consideration for the period that he served as an ambassador in Albania. Rama’s letter comes as a reply to the letter that Withers sent to all Albanians a few days ago, with the help of Top-Channel. Rama’s letter says:

“Dear friend, I recall our interesting conversations and I will always value their sincerity. This is an occasion for saying that time has proved your right even for the cases on which we have not had the accordance that usually characterized our dialogue. I am very grateful for the benevolent critics you have given me in the few but not unimportant occasions, when we had to debate for this country’s progress. I guarantee you that I value your directness as an honor towards our friendship, as a way that expresses discordance to help progress”.

Rama writes that Withers’ letter underlines the fact that the US says the truth. This has made the USA world’s biggest friends of citizens who are aspiring freedom, human rights, democracy and good governing; and the worst enemy of all individual forces that exert influence, pressure and terror over the human freedoms, on societies still occupied by antidemocratic regimes or hybrid regimes all over the globe. Rama also reminds the problems that Albania is facing with the EU integration, saying that here in Albania they’re on the verge of losing another test for the EU candidate status; the bitter end of another year of lost opportunities, due to a crisis that on the same time is an extraordinary chance for changing towards the right direction.

“This chance cannot be missed, and this crisis cannot be prolonged or remain without opening way to the right change, for which we have proposed a start, a step, a common direction with some goals that can be easily achieved; where we must find the missing understanding on Albania’s behalf, the citizens of which deserve harmonic efforts from the entire political class in order to guarantee free and honest elections; a functional Parliament; state-forming reforms of EU standards; independent institutions; a liberated justice from the grips of corruption; to guarantee the freedom of speech and also to liberate ourselves from any politician who is aiming today or will be aiming tomorrow to take power through deceit. In this sense, what has been published by you and is being commented by the Albanians, due to the serious concerns of your State, deserves to be politically addressed with a public gesture of all Albanian elected politicians, for liberating ourselves and our people from the unbearable burden of a guilt that cannot remain collective, at any cost, while Albania suffers the triumph of the impunity culture.
