The Socialist Party leader, Edi Rama, Prime Minister-Designate of
Albania, was invited on BBC’s most important political talk show hosted
by Sarah Montague, “HARDtalk”.
According to Transparency International, Albania is the most corrupted country in Europe, and Rama’s interview was mostly focused on this topic.
“The man that will be Albania’s Prime Minister in September is a modern artist, praised by internationals for transforming Tirana when serving as Mayor, and not only through the vivid colors that decorated the grey buildings. Rama has promised a revival of the entire country. Will he be able to succeed where other politicians have failed?
“This remains to be seen. I think this is time to give our country a good cleaning. It is still a country with a bad reputation and not all of it is undeserved. On the same time it is a country of extraordinary potential and full ot talents that live within and outside its borders. The truth is that we haven’t done enough to fix its image even under the surveillance of the European Union, due to the European Union integration process, the clear problems that have appeared and that we need to resolve. I think that when you deal with corruption and the deep problems created by it, you must always be aware that it is the system that corrupts people, and not vice versa. I strongly believe that the fight against corruption is related to the modernization of our system and the creation of ways that do not allow people to profit from a faulty system”, Rama declared.
The last elections and the January 21st events were also mentioned during the 30 minutes interview.
“We are committed to continue the process that must bring to justice everyone who is involved in the January 21st deaths, and this will be decided by the court”, Rama declared.
The journalist asked if Sali Berisha will be on the defendant’s bench.
“It’s not about what I want or what I think. This is about the justice system. When I spoke about Sali Berisha, I said that he is responsible in the moral and political sense. Certainly that the court must continue, but based on an independent process”, Rama declared.
Rama adds that they must find a way to reform the health system, which will transform it from the current system to a functional one.
As for the question if there is needed a radical cleansing of the Albanian administration, the Prime Minister declared: “We don’t have to do that. I am sure that there are valuable people within the system. What we need is to transform the system. We cannot invent something from scratch, we just have to follow the examples of successful foreign stories, and there are many of these, even in more difficult situations than Albania, which show that corruption can be defeated”, Rama declared.
