Rama: SP, advocate of EU status

20/06/2012 19:40

During his visit in Brussels, the Socialist leader, Edi Rama, met the
European Parliament President, Martin Schulz, the Belgian prime
Minister, Elio di Rupo, and the General Director for Enlargement,
Stefano Sannino.

“We know that the unilateral election of the Albanian President has dramatically decreased Albania’s chances for the EU candidate status. Our European vocation and our clear commitment to the public, in function of the national interest, impose us to make all efforts. Toaday, in all meetings, I tried to be a good advocate of the national interest and the European aspiration of the Albanian people”, Rama declared.

TCH: The presidential election is over, and even it was not one of the 12 EU criteria, it was a test for the country. What can the SP do now for fulfilling the reforms that we need for the candidate status?

Edi Rama: “The European family cannot make a step towards us if we don’t make a step towards them by guaranteeing a consensual electoral reform, the will for not repeating the history of stolen elections and the cycle of power that doesn’t come from the free vote of the people. This is clear for everyone. The ODIHR report is clear. All stances of the European family and US government are very clear: Albania must make free and honest elections.”

TCH: According to the Action Plan, the agreement should have been completed within spring, so that the Parliament could vote in December the Electoral Code amends. Is this the next failure of the electoral reform?

Edi Rama: “Unfortunately, now is happening what we suspected when we entered the process, and when we underlined that the deadlines are what make this a success or a failure history. The deadlines are over and we have the same scenario: the delay of the major issues by putting the opposition, the public, the European family and the international community in front of a done deal. The Socialist Party is making everything possible, but we are in opposition. I guarantee you that after one year we will be in power and our government will do what this government has been unable to do in seven years. We will do it because we believe and because we know how to do it properly”.

TCH: You believe that you will come to power with the next elections, while the electoral code has not been completed yet. Where do you find this trust?

Edi Rama: “The Socialist Party and the Albanian opposition will win the next elections with or without the electoral code, but the electoral reform is basic for guaranteeing the European families and that every vote will be read as it should. By stealing, Berisha and his men will be able to make a narrower result, but they will be unable to overthrow the people’s will, because it will be a winning result for the Socialist Party and the Albanian opposition.
