Rama: “Pact with DP was for EU integration. I will resign if SP loses”

The Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, spoke about the political
agreement with the Democratic Party and its leader Lulzim Basha, which,
he said is historic as regards the country’s EU integration.

“We have a historic opportunity, also thanks to the agreement with the Democratic Party, entering this way in a new political phase, being very aware that the government and opposition must play Albania’s advocate for opening the negotiations. There is no agreement to bring down the foundations of our constitution, as it is, but there is an agreement for improving a very important aspect of it, related to the elections and the electoral system”, Rama said.

Despite the persistence of journalist Sokol Balla, the Prime Minister didn’t give a clear answer to the question if a coalition with the Democratic Party was a possibility.

“It will be decided by the people. This is not up to me. We are going to read the citizens’ vote and will see if they will give us a clear mandate, or if they will want to distribute the responsibility”, Rama said.

But the Prime Minister was more articulate with the attacks against the SMI, saying it was one of the small and clientelist parties.

“All smaller parties want vote so that can employ their members. I was in favor of coalitions while the SMI was not very open about this need. They created a formula half of which went in favor of the Democratic Party”, Rama said.

This is the first time that Edi Rama openly admitted that the relation with Ilir Meta, newly voted President, was deteriorated.

The Prime Minister had reserves about the electoral campaign that the newly elected President is following with the SMI.

Also for the first time Rama said that if the Socialist Party would lose these elections, he would conclude his political career.
