Rama: “Opening communist files, obligation to victims”

The Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, declared this Friday that the
opening of the former Secret Service files is not being done just
because of an electoral promise, but because it is an obligation to
everyone who suffered from the regime.

Rama says that his government started working on opening the files since day one and that it has always been seen not only as a priority, but as additional burden on the stack of inherited problems.

“It is true that this project does not affect the economy, but it is a basic change in the report with the past and with the society itself”, Rama declared.

Rama underlined that there has been silence after 2010 about this topic, and they have undertaken to break it.

Then he underlined: “After 2010 there was silence for this matter. We have decided to break this silence, not because of the electoral engagement, but because we believe that this initiative is an obligation that we have towards everyone who suffered from the prosecution of the past regime. Albania cannot be the only country who did not open the Secret Service archives. Opening the files gives life to our aspiration for living in a democratic society”.

The Prime Minister declared that the opening of the communist files will be based on the German model, because Germany has had success with this process.
