Agriculture in Albania is only suffering losses year after year,
according to the farmers at the Lezhe area who met the opposition
leader, Edi Rama, and declared that their products are not bringing any
income for at least the last three years.
Rama visited a farmer who had invested in 70 cows with the money brought by his emigrant children. Today he has only five cows.
“We’re in bankruptcy with the milk and all our money are spent on gas. We’ve sold our product cheaper than the cost. Nothing has been done with the irrigation canals in 20 years, and we are in a very bad situation”, the farmer declared.
The increased costs of the raw materials, such as gas and seeds, and the lack of the irrigation and drainage systems have brought an increase of the production cost, according to the farmers of another agricultural area in Lezhe, where they met the opposition leader Edi Rama together with their representative MP, Gjovalin Kadeli and Agron Duka, member of the Working Group for the SP Program.
“It’s useless to continue with this. Everyone is on bankruptcy. We were full of desire and will to work, but now we’re not even motivated”, the farmer declared.
Rama continued his meetings at a turkey farm in Mape, Lezhe. Farmers say that the lack of help from the state, the high production cost and the drastic buying power reduction has brought them to bankruptcy. The opposition leader says that this situation demands a new approach to the agricultural politics, promising that, once in power, the SP would take all necessary steps for decreasing the production cost.
“The entire cycle is blocked. Those who give the materials to you, put a steep price due to the expensive gas, and all that remains for you is to survive rather than to live. It is necessary to build this policy to 100%, so that the costs could get lower. Without reducing the cost, without removing the oil excise, the oil VAT, the oil circulation tax, and without reducing the seeds with at least 10% and without giving a direct help to every farm, not by saying that we support only those who have more heads of cattle, but by supporting everyone who undertakes such a business. This is the economic bankruptcy of all families that live in villages. This is the bankruptcy of the national economy, which stands no chances without the support of the farms”, Rama declared.
The opposition leader declared that it is intolerable that a country like ours, which has all opportunities for agricultural development, imports ten times more than it exports.
Rama says that this can change through the Socialist program that aims to recover the domestic farms and that the SP will implement as soon as they will be in power, as Rama promised.
