The decision taken in Trieste to create a joint economic area in Western
Balkan was commented by many in Tirana as an effort to bring back
former Yugoslavia.
Prime Minister Rama opposed this theory and said that the realization of energy and infrastructure projects will make Balkan a more attractive market.
“This is an European project. There is not bigger stupidity than the comparison to former Yugoslavia”, the Prime Minister said.
Albania received five projects at the Trieste summit, which will be realized some years later. Together with his own government’s 1-billion-dollar project for the next four years, Prime Minister Rama says there is an important economic objective for Albania.
“All of this creates an optimistic hope to achieve the 5% economic growth within our ruling term. This would make it for the common citizens to feel the economic growth”, the Prime Minister said.
But Brussels’ focus on the Balkan economic stability has left the enlargement perspective in shadows. Prime Minister Rama didn’t hide the fact that Albania may not start the negotiations this year, although the Vetting Law was realized.
“We have done our job, and the recent elections were considered a success story. Now it is up to the EU to keep their word. The EU may do once again what they often do. They may bring up new things, but we are ready to open the accession negotiations”, Rama said.
