The Socialist leader, Edi Rama, declared that the integration process for Albania is first of all a government responsibility.
During an interview for Voice of America in Washington, Rama declared that as regards the opposition, it has fulfilled its obligations and everything now depends on the government’s will for fulfilling the Brussels recommendations.
“The EU integration is a process that is based on the EU recommendations. We have created conditions for a consensus in Parliament. The responsibility is not the same for everyone. The government has most of it, and the Socialist Party has made its part”, Rama declared.
Asked about the electoral reform, the opposition leader underlined that the parties have had conflicts because one of them doesn’t want to abandon the unpleasant actions that have been recorded in the past electoral processes.
“We will work for the electoral reform, so that it can be planned according to the ODIHR recommendations. There could be disagreements due to those unpleasant problems that have been verified in other elections. We have made it clear that there is space for improvement in the electoral system, in function of an equal value and more righteous representation of all political forces”, Rama underlined.
Asked about the January 21st events, Rama denied have any responsibility of Socialist Party for the killings, and underlined that the people who gave the orders and the ones who executed them are the real responsible that the law is not punishing for the crime that they have committed.
“I think that the facts speak better than any comment. 132 people have been arrested, investigated, trialed and have paid for their share of responsibility in a process that is equal, because the protesters have taken all their part of responsibility. On the other hand, the people who gave the orders and the ones that executed them have not been punished, not morally, not politically, and neither in front of the trial. SP remains clear in its decisions. Everyone is equal in front of the law, and we have never opposed the trial of anyone under investigation”, Rama underlined, rejecting the claims that SP was the one to incite violence.
“Absolutely not. Justice concluded that there is no evidence proving that SP was violent. The people have been beaten inside the police stations, and this was proved in the Helsinki Committee report”, he added.
When asked if the Socialist Party would support the candidacy of Fatos Nano for President, Rama declared:
“The goal of the Socialist Party is clear and transparent. We believe that Albania needs a President that can guarantee the right of the institutions depending from it, in order to protect the national interests. We cannot mention names and we cannot judge anyone”, Rama declared.
