Rama confronted with University representatives about recent salary issue

The Albanian Prime Minister, Edi Rama, declared at a meeting with the University Senate that their problem is with themselves, not with the government since the reform gave them autonomy.

“No one can take this reform hostage with signature or with other legitimate concerns. You can express your legitimate concerns through this reform because the main problem the university has today is with itself, not with the government and not with the law. The University has a new challenge today, which is more autonomy. The debate that we should have is ‘what should the government do to guarantee this autonomy’, not for the government to join one side against another. This may have a lot to do with the past, but not with me and with my government”, Rama said.

The Prime Minister added that the Tirana University was accredited as the worst in the entire country, based on the British Accrediting company.

“It was not made by the SP, by my cousins or by the cousins of Dhori Kule (Rector)”, Rama said.

As for the delayed salaries, Rama said that it is a clear example that the reform is a challenge even for those who have led it and turned it into law.

“It has delayed us as a government as well, through a debate between the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finances. It is about the heritage of an unconditioned grant. The Ministry of Education in this case rightfully insists that the grant should be inherited automatically and should be administered by the university itself. The Ministry of Finances insist that it should be inherited each year, but with an approval from the Ministry of Finances”, Rama said.
