In an interview for Top Channel, the Albanian Prime Minsiter, Edi Rama, declared from Berlin that he is pleased with the summit so far.
“I am happy with the meeting I had with the German chancellor, and also with the conclusions of the intensive meeting that was held for the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia. I am happy with the meeting that I had with Andrea Nahles (Head of the German Social-Democratic Party Parliamentary Group) and with Johann Wadephul (CDU).
Rama said that his meetings with Merkel and Macron showed that their approach on Albania’s EU accession negotiations was on the right direction: “There’s one detail, related to the internal matters of the Bundestag. They need to review the matter based on the report of the Commission. Whoever says that Albania will not have the EU accession negotiations opened this year, is only saying what he desires. Unfortunately, desperate people who want to see Albanai fail, the same way they want to see the dialogue between Serbia and Kosovo fail, are once again wrong. Albania will not fail and we will make it”, Rama said.
The Prime Minister declared that he asked the Chancellor and President Macron what Albania deserves: support for opening the accession negotiations.
“We have been working for a year, with a process that normally takes place when the negotiations are open. We are actually in that process, with the understanding that Albania is in a new phase. It is now time to officialize the opening of the negotiations. This is what I have asked and what I will be asking until the end. I trust that we will make it”, Rama said.
As for the news reports in Kosovo and Albania, who say that the Summit was a failure for Kosovo and Albania, Rama said that these are just political declarations, addressing their articles to their own electorate, while he speaks directly to Albanians.
“And I want to tell them that the country will not fail. Kosovo has a very positive new development. Chancellor Merkel and President Macron are personally engaged. Germany and France will be involved in an intensive process of dialogue, without conditions and prejudice. We discussed the border issue and it was said that we cannot have ethnic borders. This was ruled out by everyone. But there will be no prejudice or precondition for the dialogue to continue”.
Rama concluded his interview with Top Channel’s journalist Muhamed Veliu, by saying that they also discussed Albania’s internal matters, with the Chancellor and the CDU Parliamentary Group leader as well, and they all agreed that the opposition’s decision to renounce Parliamentary seats, and boycotting the elections, is something intolerable.
