Rama and Basha against judges who challenged vetting law

The complaint filed by the Union of Judges and Association of Judges
against the Vetting Law didn’t find support by the opposition this time.

Lulzim Basha gave an interview for Top Channel while on his electoral campaign in Korce, and he gave total support to the Vetting Law.

“I don’t recognize this complaint. The DP supports the Vetting Law, for cleaning the Albanian judiciary system from corrupted judges and prosecutors, especially the ones with criminal ties. We are the ones demanding the vetting law for the past three years and a half, in order to remove corrupted judges and prosecutors”, Basha said.

One of the requests made by Judges is to declare as anti-constitutional a law related to the verification of the integrity of judges and prosecutors suspected of having ties with the organized crime, without a final court verdict.

According to them, this could cause abuses with the Vetting Commissions. However, the Prime Minister says that abusers are ranked within the judiciary system.

“They say they want the vetting law, but not for organized crime. What do they want it for then? Because that’s what the vetting law is about, connections with crime. They say this should not be done, because it is a violation of human rights. It is a human right violation when judges sit and dine with criminals they are supposed to try”, Rama said.

The implementation of the Vetting Law was one of the Rama-Basha agreement reached on May 18th. The agreement will be completely fulfilled after the Parliament votes the Vetting Commissions with 3/5th of the votes.
