Raise in medication imports/ Since start of the pandemic Albania purchased €137m in drugs

The Covid-19 pandemic has increased the import of drugs to record levels during the month of October, as according to the Institute of Statistics, the import of medicines reached the value of ALL 2.7 billion or about 22 million euros.

Since the start of the pandemic in mid-March until the end of last month, Albania has imported a total of ALL 17 billion, equivalent to EUR 137.2 million, about ALL 1 billion more than a year ago.

Growing uncertainties about the new virus prompted local pharmaceutical trading companies to import more drugs mainly during the first months of the coronavirus in the country.

The spread of the virus during this period has significantly increased the demand for antibiotics, vitamins mainly for C and D, while there has been increasing consumption for other drugs such as cortisone or anticoagulants that are widely used by those affected by Covid-19.

In terms of countries from which Albania imported more drugs over the past month, Italy tops the list with a 14% increase, especially for vitamins.

On the other hand, pharmaceutical products imported from Switzerland have also increased, while Turkey, on the other hand, is ranked third as the country from which Albania has received deliveries of medicines, with about 10% of the total.
