The Macedonian President, Gjorgje Ivanov, visited Moscow last week but a
comment coming from Vladimir Putin was not received well in Bulgaria.

Putin said that the Cyrilic alphabet and the Slavic literature went to Russia through the lands of Macedonia.

As response, Ivanov reminded the work of the Cyril and Methodius brothers, founders of the Glagolitic script, which served as the base for the Cyrilic alphabet.

But the day Ivanov arrived in Moscow, Bulgaria celebrated the Day of Slavic Alphabet.

“I am surprised that the President of the biggest Slavic country doesn’t know history/ Russia, which speaks so much about Slavs and Orthodoxy, doesn’t know histiory”, said the Bulgarian Minister of Defense, Mrasimir Karakachanov.

The Bulgarian Prime Minister, Bojko Borisov, was more restraint.

“We must thank the brothers Cyril and Methodius that today we have 300 million people writing and reading in Cyrilic, which enriches the European culture”, he said.

The former Bulgarian ambassador to Moscow, Ilian Vassilev, said that Putin is using Serbia and Macedonia as his puppets, to pressure Bulgaria.

Many diplomats and politicians reacted after Putin’s declaration, calling it a provocation against Bulgaria.
