Punishment against “jihad” in Albania

The majority and opposition at the Commission of Laws approved with
consensus the proposal made by Parliament Members for changing the
Criminal Code, by giving details about the punishment of those who
participate in armed conflicts in a foreign country.

The changes arrived after dozens of Albanians were verified as participants in the Syrian war. Some self-proclaimed imams were accused of terrorism after encouraging and funding the participation of these Albanians in the Syrian war. With the changes made to the Criminal Code, the participation in foreign wars is punished with three to eight years in prison.

When this criminal act is made for overthrowing the public order or the territorial integrity of another country, it will be punished with five to 10 years in prison. The Criminal Code amends punish also those who organize participation in wars of a foreign country.

Those who encourage, recruit, train and create funds for this activity, are punished with 5 to 15 years in prison. Referring to international acts and similar experience in other European Union member countries, the amends in the criminal code punish those people who appeal for violent activity in another country.
