The decision for the price of the urban transportation will now be a
competence of the local government. The Commission of Economy has
approved the initiative of the government, which declared that local
councils should decide for the urban transportation ticket price.
“On one hand the local government has a substantial competence for signing an agreement for this issue, and on the other hand they cannot decide about the fee, which is part of the agreement. This competence was formally given to the government. We made consultions and reached a conclusion to give this competence to the Municipality”, declared Ylli Manjani, Deputy Minister of Transportation.
The draft was opposed by the opposition, which voted against.
“This law will create a conflict from which the government will try to take advantage, but the ones to pay will be the citizens”, declared the Democratic Party Parliament Member, Sherefedin Shehu.
“This competence does not belong to the local government in any other country of the region, without a regulatory entity. This is done so that this service was offered properly. It is impossible for the Municipality to play a regulatory role and define market prices”, declared the Democratic Party Parliament Member, Jorida Tabaku.
“The Mayor of Tirana has increased the water price with 60%, naturally with that of the Regulatory Entity which you have turned into a political institution. This is the truth. Now that we are almost ready to travel through a tram in Tirana, the government cannot decide the tram ticket price”, declared Erjon Brace, Chairman of the Commission of Economy.
Urban Transportation companies have recently asked to increase the ticket price, especially in the Albanian capital.
