Citizens and civil society activists have been protesting from early
morning in front of the Albanian Parliament and the Albanian Prime
Minister’s office.
The former Prime Minister, Sali Berisha, and the Democratic Party leader, Lulzim Basha, appealed the citizens to raise in protests, but they met with a strong reaction from the crowd, which whistled, booed and chanted: “No politics”. The crowd did not accept for the matter to be politicized, and asked Berisha to go away.
This reaction made Berisha and Basha leave the site within a few minutes.
Parliament Speaker, Ilir Meta, declared in front of the citizens who were protesting in front of the Parliament:
“You must be sure that every decision will keep in consideration the future of Albania, the future of the people, and that’s why you should trust that this is your Parliament, this is your government”, Meta declared.
The Parliament Speaker guaranteed that no decision has been taken yet about the chemical weapons, and that everything is speculation.
“I promise that together with the most renowned representatives of the civil society, the best experts of our country and with everyone who cares about our future, we will always be on your side, on the side of our future and you must be certain that this Parliament and this government cannot go against your will”, Meta declared.
Thousands of university and high school students stood for several hours in front of the Parliament to oppose the arrival of chemical weapons from Syria, marking the biggest civil protest so far about this matter.
