Prosecution sends 13 sailors to trial for oil smuggling from Libya to Durrës

Durrës Prosecutor’s Office has sent for trial the 13 sailors detained after 62 thousand liters of oil were seized by the Albanian authorities, after being smuggled from Libya.

Six months after the joint 48-hour operation of the State Police and the Italian Guardia di Finanza, the prosecution has sent for trial the case against 13 citizens, 3 of whom are Albanians, the others foreigners.

The two fishing vessels, one Albanian and one Libyan, namely “Geni” and “ABOBAKR 124”, were seized by the Italian Guardia di Finanza aftër being found exchanging oil on open sea, with the aim to trade it in Albania at a cheaper price.

After the arrest, the managers of the Albanian fishing vessel “Geni” declared that they were supplied with oil for the needs of the vessel and not to market it for profit.

If found guilty, the three accused, the respective drivers of the two ships, risk up to 7 years in prison.

Meanwhile the sailors who are accused of not reporting the crime, the criminal code provides for a fine or imprisonment of up to 3 years.
