Private education costs increase, 2.3% more with the new academic year

Private education has increased tuition fees, an increase that has started in 2022, peaking at 2.3% in September 2023, according to the latest data from the Institute of Statistics.

The increase in teachers’ salaries, costs of food and teaching aids, have made private students’ education even more expensive every year. But this service may raise prices even further after the Ministry of Finance proposed to restore the 20% tax on private education, which is opposed by the association of non-public schools of Albania.

“The profit margin in private education does not enable the burden of the VAT tax from the schools. Consequently, the entire burden will pass to the parents with the increase in prices, which will cause tremendous dissatisfaction among the families of 82,500 private education students”, explains Ermal Hasimja, president of the Association of Non-Public Schools of Albania.

From kindergartens to universities, leaders of private educational institutions have come together asking the Ministry of Education and Finance not to approve this proposal, even though the IMF recommends that the increased tax will not pose a problem.

“Private schools currently and generally educate children of the middle classes, doctors, engineers. Albania does not have many rich people”, says Hasimja.
