Prison for DUI

After making an analyze for the high number of road accidents in our
country, the Interior Minister, Saimir Tahiri, asked the State Police to
take extreme measures for arresting every person that will be found
driving under the influence of alcohol. They will use the charge 291 of
the Criminal Code, which foresees a three year prison sentence.

This strategy of the Interior Ministry will be used to reduce the number of accident, and this remains the concrete plan for the arrest of drunk drivers. The former punishment was suspending their licenses.

This punishment will also be valid for drivers without a license, and their failure to obey to the police officers or any effort to offend them will also be punished with prison, which is something that takes place often in Albania and has decreased the personality of the law enforcer.

Although these actions were punished by criminal charges even before, there hasn’t been any case so far. But the new practice will be effective only when the police will have enough evidence to convince the court, at least for drunk drivers.
