Kosovo Police arrested the Imam of the Big Mosque of Prishtina, Shefqet
Krasniqi. He was taken for interrogation today. The arrest was part of
an operation of the police in the early hours of this morning.
Krasniqi is suspected of inciting hate, division and ethnic, racial, religious and national discrimination.
The police operation took place in 10 locations in Prishtina, Ferizaj, Gjilan, Peje and Prizren.
“10 locations have been searched by the police, two NGO-s, one private house and seven dormitories”, the police say.
However, he was released by noon, but will be prosecuted. Imam Shefqet Krasniqi is known for his speeches about Islam, while in the US State Department report he is considered a man that incites religious hatred.
Krasniqi has been very present in the Kosovo media with his articles and TV debates, frequently seen with political figures. He has the support of the Prishtina Muslims and has published and translated several books.
Krasniqi is a professor at the Faculty of Islamic Sciences. The news for his arrest made his followers open at least two Facebook pages in his support.
