The Socialist leader, Edi Rama, summarized some of his meetings after
returning from Washington DC, USA. In an interview for Top Channel’s
program, Top Story, hosted by Sokol Balla, he said that the US high rank
officials enabled him to present the vision of the Albanian opposition
regarding the future of the country and the issues of the Balkan region.
Edi Rama declared that these meetings were inspiring.

“It is an important moment for the opposition to have direct contacts with the US government, who have directly affected many events in the Balkan region and Albania, a very precious and inspiring meeting for us”, Rama declared.

Asked by journalist Sokol Balla regarding the election of the new President, Rama declared that the international partners see this as a key issue.

“America wants Albania to overcome the process of the new President as a maturity test that will give to the country a figure of national unity. Even for the EU, the Presidential election will be a way for testing Albania’s maturity. We are in harmony with the international partners, the national interest that demands for Albania to have a President that stays above the parties, the incarnation of the national unity, someone who guarantees that the institutions will not fall under the vandal control of the governments.  For us, the President is an issue much bigger than the Democratic Party and the government’s interests. The president is a key issue”, Rama declared.

The Socialist leader has categorically excluded the election of Jozefina Topalli, the current Parliament Speaker, as a possible candidate for President.

“The process will bring the names and not the names bringing the process. I think that Jozefina Topalli cannot be considered a name, let alone starting the process. Any figure of the Democratic Party is categorically excluded”, Rama added.

Rama did not exclude the candidacy of Fatos Nano, the former Socialist leader and Prime Minister. Rama added that he would not be a candidate of the Socialist Party.

“Fatos Nano is not a SP candidate. He has cut his relations with the SP by his own choice, for building a profile above the parties, and has expressed his ambition for finding the consensus to become President. We must not interfere in who will be the first to ask for the consensus”, Rama declared.

Rama also commented the new political forces that are being created, from President Bamir Topi and to the vice Chairman of the High Court of Justice, Kreshnik Spahiu. Rama declared that both of them are parties that are being created from the people of the Democratic Party, as a rebellion against the party led by Berisha.

When asked about the electoral system, Rama declared that the international community has expressed their concern about the delays in this reform. He commented that the actual system should be improved especially for correcting the vote and giving an equal value to the votes in every area.

Rama concluded his interview by saying that the sale of Albpetrol is completely abusive and that when in power, the Socialists will see with transparency all processes that have been objected when in opposition.
