Through a Facebook post, Ilir Meta called on journalists not to give in to pressure from the government or their owners, as he invited them to “establish together a transparent media and start with the overthrow of this disgusting media regime that shames every person with dignity”.
“Today I want to express the strongest solidarity with journalists who are under brutal pressure due to the horror of reporting their truths to the public. The fear from free speech and the reflection of the truth is the main feature of criminal regimes that do not base their government on free voting and free speech, but on keeping their people oppressed and intimidated. Nothing stops the change!”, wrote Meta.
“Now another time is coming! Please inform me that when your owners surrender to the pressures of the government, we should establish a transparent media together to launch the new era with overthrow of this disgusting media regime that shames everyone with the least dignity. Do not give in to the pressures of power and owners! As President, but also as a citizen, I am today with the journalist Beti Njuma and her family injured by the tyranny of a shameless and brutal government, but also with her colleagues who are blackmailed every moment”, wrote Meta, referring to a government-critical television Ora News journalist, recently placed under seizure by authorities.
