Albanian President Ilir Meta issued a statement today explaining the return of the judges’ swearing-in law, calling it among other things, absurd and anti-constitutional.
“By presenting this absurd and unconstitutional proposal, the socialist majority aims at resolving its long-term goal, abducting the powers of the President of the Republic, and limiting the role of the Head of State in this process, for which the majority had already initiated an additional parliamentary inquiry. The original draft law proposed by the three original MPs contained a total of 3 articles, which, in addition to new unconstitutional restrictions and procedure, provided that the law would have retroactive effect so that any person elected / appointed and who had not taken the oath, would have sworn under the provisions of this new amendment once this proposal came into force”, stated the president’s clarification, among other things.
