President: I win, if people vote

The Albania President, Bamir Topi, declared that he would challenge any
Albanian politician if the President would be elected by the people.

The President replied to PM Berisha’s accusations, and said that he is still on duty and is not an appendix of anyone.

“I can tell you what I have always said. I reconfirm clearly and without any doubt that the institution of the President has been and will remain the one that represents the constitution better, and that has implemented and will implement them until the last day that I will be on duty. The President can never fulfill the party’s desires; will never be the appendix of any political party, regardless the political background. I guarantee the Albanian citizens that despite the insinuations, the President will remain on duty until the end of the mandate”, Topi declared.

Topi underlined that he would not run for another mandate, unless the gentlemen who have the Constitution in their hands would make the Presidential election through popular vote.

“I will not candidate, unless the gentlemen change the constitution and make the President to be elected by the people, as it should be, rather than the Parliament. But the chances for this are very few, because the politicians are the first to fear the people’s verdict”, Topi declared.

The President gave these declarations after a meeting at the Children’s Home in Durres, and after he decorated some personalities in the coastal city. The President then visited the Senior Citizens’ Home in Kavaja, where he met the local leaders and representatives of the religious communities.

Berisha: Topi has built his new party at the Presidency

Prime Minister Sali Berisha accused the head of the Albanian state, Bamir Topi, over what he called “the implementation of the Presidency by a small party”.

Berisha claimed that Topi had already announced the leaders and vice leaders of his party, and that he is using the Presidency as electoral machinery for the next campaign.

“Topi is turning the Presidency in the headquarters of a small party, making this way an unprecedented act. He has also assigned the vice leaders of the party, damaging this way the functions of the head of the state”, Berisha declared, underlining that the President has forgotten to take care of his duties.

Berisha connected Topi’s party with the Red and Black Alliance, which is led by the high council of justice, Kreshnik Spahiu. According to him, this organization showed to be less than 1% of the population, based on their failure to damage the Census process.

“His party made the worst propaganda against the Census, and the vice Chairman of the High Council of Justice traveled the country with his propaganda against the minorities of the country. And the President kept silence, because the one who was talking was his vice chairman”, the head of the government declared.

As for Topi’s declaration that these were the last days of his presidency, Berisha declared that this confirmation had come two weeks after he himself had ruled out his candidacy.

Berisha also called Bamir Topi “a right winged politician that sings on the left”, and that he had lost all contacts with the right winged party that elected him President.

According to Berisha, all of this was because Topi had refused to decree the lustration law and that he had had a direct involvement in the January 21st events, when four protesters died.

As for the next President, Berisha underlined that he and the Democratic Party would only implement the Constitution. He underlined that the Democratic Party will present a well known figure from the Democratic ranks for the Presidential candidacy.

Berisha declared that DP could not choose a candidacy such as the former Socialist Prime Minister, Fatos Nano, and that after the recent Constitutional amends, it was up to the majority to elect him.
