The head of the Parliamentary Group of the DP opposition, Gazment Bardhi, today considered the enactment of the law on investigative commissions by Albanian President Bajram Begaj, “shameful”.

Bardhi stated that the role of the President is to be above the parties, while adding that the announcement of the law today was made according to the principle of agreement with socialist Prime Minister Edi Rama.

Bardhi stated: The announcement of the law today was made on the principle that if Rama agreed to revise it, the president would find constitutional arguments to return the law. It was the majority that did not have any reflection, but on the contrary increased the arrogant restrictive measures against the opposition. Today the President lost the opportunity to be above the parties and to be the guarantor of the constitution. This is because if we agree with the majority, the president returns the law for reconsideration when in fact his duty is to return it when he finds problems.”

Bardhi further added: “The president decided to approve and announce unconstitutional laws, so I call on him to stand up, as he ended the chance ghe was given to fulfill this mission.”

At noon on Thursday, head of state Begaj decreed the law on “Functioning of investigative commissions of the Assembly” without considering the request of the opposition. The president accompanied this decree with a technical and political argument, stressing that he did not find any violation of the Constitution in it. Returning laws for review, says the president, is not the constitutional instrument given to the President of the Republic to facilitate dialogue.
