The World Bank says that the number of people living in extreme poverty
increased with three times from 2008 to 2012. The Bank classifies as
individuals in extreme poverty those who live with less than 1.9 USD a
day, based on the buying power standard.
According to the Bank’s figures, there were 10.900 people in 2008 living in this level, but by the end of 2012, after four years of weak economic growth, this number went to 30.900, taking 1.06 % of the entire population.
Although 1.06% seems a low figure, data show that most of the individuals earning above 1.9 USD a day are just a little above this limit, which leaves them in constant danger to fall in extreme poverty.
According to the Bank, Albania remains the most threatened country of all similar economies in the region. For the Bank, 32.1% of the population in Albania lives with less than 5 dollars a day. This population in Bosnia is 2%, and in Macedonia, 23.86.
Bank’s data confirm once again that Albania’s progress after 2008 has been in a stalemate and some indicators have even deteriorated.
