Population registration, draft-law at Parliament

Red and Black Alliance representatives submitted in Parliament the
draft-law initiated by dozens of thousands Albanian citizens who oppose
population registration on ethnic and religious bases.

“We are requesting an addition to the population registration law. This addition aims to offer credible data, upon which will be improved the Civil Registrar’s Office register. We want to add that the Registrar’s Office register comes before self-declarations”, said Endri Shabani, Red and Black alliance representative.

The Alliance has noted that in a laic country such as Albania, the population registration on ethnic and religious bases is an illegal procedure.

“In order to guard Albania’s laicism, and also the spirit of tolerance and religious co-existence, the population registration must not be made on ethnic and religious bases. The Albanian Constitution clearly states that laic countries undertake population registration processes in order to gather important data, through which it plans its policies. More than 50% of Albania’s citizens are against population registration on ethnic bases. This means that the Albanian state might start a registration process with another danger, the lacking of their citizens’ will to complete the forms”, Shabani declared.

Red and Black Alliance representatives waited for two hours outside the Parliament until they submitted the petition with the signatures of thousands of citizens, because protocol offices were closed.
