Politically persecuted law changed

The government has made an essential change to the law for the
compensation of the politically persecuted people during the communist regime,
changing the date when the compensation period starts.

Up to now, as politically persecuted were classified all people who were persecuted, killed, violated with or without trial by the regime of the dictator Enver Hoxha, starting from 30 November 1944, the first day when the country was considered not occupied.

The changed law is moving this date on 25 November 1944, and not without a reason. In this time, the National Antifascist and Liberation Council of the Communist Party not only was self-declared as the only power in Albania and executed all political adversaries, but On 23 October 1944, this Council was also self-declared in Berat as the new government and Enver Hoxha was chosen as a Prime Minister.

The changes to the law for the compensation of the politically persecuted people during the communist regime, for the Prime Minister Berisha are the establishment of a historical justice. He even expressed his dissatisfaction that history in Albania has not fully revealed the real truth of Enver Hoxha’s crimes.

“Authentic documents prove the platform that was confirmed by the dictator in his writing, the platform for eliminating political adversaries without trial and proofs. Justice must triumph in the most undisputable way, based in history. We are not talking about softening any stance against the collaborationists. He has taken a worldly punishment. We are talking about the ones that were executed for political convictions and clear antinationalistic stances”, Berisha declared.

According to these amends, the politically persecuted people of the communist regime will be classified, even those who are condemned for terrorism. After the meeting that Prime Minister Berisha held a few days ago with the former persecuted people associations, their request for receiving the compensation until December 31st of this year is fulfilled with this law. Meanwhile, Berisha asked the Ministry of Culture to start working for turning into a museum the most notorious prison of the communist regime, the Spaç Prison.

“Spaç should be reconstructed for symbolizing the cruelty of the regime. We cannot celebrate the 100th anniversary of independence without reshaping our history free of revenge. Albania has no revenge, but the national memory is indispensable. We are a nation that must learn in order to build our future, by knowing what we experienced”, Berisha declared.
