Political analysts comment Netherlands’ vote: “Negotiations should start, even conditioned”

Netherland’s vote against Albania’s EU accession negotiations was received with irony and humor by Albanian politicians, while analysts say that the negotiations should be opened, even if conditioned.

The Democratic Party vice leader, Edi Paloka, said with irony that the Netherlands voted against Edi Rama for reducing the cannabis price in Europe. But what do analysts think about it?

They still hope for a “yes” from the EU, even if it is conditioned with the establishing of judicial institutions and by giving concrete results in all levels, including free elections.

Prec Zogaj and Mentor Nazarko underline that the hesitation comes not only because the Albanian government could have done more, but also because of the EU, which has the European Parliament elections in 2019.

“If they open them, it will be for their own reasons, not because we fulfilled the conditions”, says Prec Zogaj.

“The short time until the EU elections should be used to make it clear to the EU countries about the importance of including Albania and Macedonia in the accession negotiations process”, Nazarko said.

“I hope that the negotiations will be open because it is a station that can only do good for the country”, Zogaj said.

Both Zogaj and Nazarko exclude that EU countries could condition the accession negotiations with the bringing of refugees in our country.
