One day after the Orthodox priests and other believers entered by force
in the Permet Palace of Culture, used by them as church, the Police
entered by taking it under control.

The private guards have entered in the first hours of this morning and emptied the building that has created conflict between the church and the city.

After the believers and the priests left the building after midnight, police has surrounded the building, removed the church objects and left them to one side for the priests to collect them. The broken windows and doors have been replaced, while other entrances are being closed by the city with walls.

The situation in Permet remains tense. Private bailiffs, helped by private police, have taken the object that was being used by the Orthodox church, based on a court order.

Prime Ministry reacts

The Albanian Prime Ministry reacted with a declaration for the media:

“Indecent scenes have been created in Permet in the last days. The private bailiffs have carried out a final verdict taken by the court since 2002. Through this decision, the court returned this object to the city, which has used the building during the dictatorship as a culture palace, but according to the Orthodox community, before becoming such it used to be a church, and had returned a church since 1999”, the reaction says.

“The Prime Minister values that the implementation of court orders is the basis of the rule of law. On the other hand, the scenes of the private bailiffs removing the holy objects during the execution of the court order returned the images of the communist barbarity against the cult object. This was a big offense for the Orthodox believers and all Albanian devotees”.

“The Prime Minister values the dialogue that was held today between the Municipality and asked the Cult Committee chairman to make the necessary verifications for finding a final solution and avoid any abuses or atheistic practices”.
